Record Companies; When will they get Digital?
Posted by: Grayson Brulte
With all the talk coming out of SXSW about how the new bands do not need major labels, you’re wrong. The labels offer you the loan, PR, and teams that you need to build the band and transform it into a brand. But the labels are going to have to wake up and clean house when it comes to their digital teams. They dropped the ball when it came to DRM and root kits, now it’s time to hand those executives their pink slips. You fired some of the best executives in the history of the industry; but you won’t fire the heads of your digital teams? Grow up and look in the mirror, your digital strategy is broken and it needs to be fixed.
If the labels can fix their digital stratgies and streamline the approval process they are going to rule once again, and you will need them. If not, the old executives are going to come back and form their new ventures. Then they will become the new major labels. The time is now and the ball is in your court. Learn to swim or you are going to sink and your divisions will be mergered into portfolios of share holders.
